Location: Cambridge

Client: Wilby & Burnett Architects

Hodgson & Hodgson Acoustic Consultancy was commissioned to provide acoustic design advice to Wilby & Burnett Architects for the Yusef Hamied Theatre located in the Lasdun Building at Christ's College, Cambridge to ensure that is was suitable for use for both theatre productions, music performances and conferences. Students and teachers using the theatre noted that it had a poor acoustic response and that the reverberant qualities of the room did not lend themselves well to the proposed uses.

H&H measured the existing acoustic performance of the space and provided detailed design advice in order to improve the room's acoustic response. High quality internal finishes were specified including polished solid timber acoustic perforated panelling on the walls and ceiling. These panels were also used to create angled acoustic reflectors, in order to propagate sound from the stage to the rear of the hall. The theatre is now an attractive and versatile room, which looks as good as it sounds.
