Project: Acoustic Enclosures for 2 12MW Sulzer Diesel Engines

Scope of Hodgson & Hodgson Group Supply The design, manufacture and supervision of installation of 2 Uniclosure type Acoustic Enclosures of approximate dimensions 12m x 6m x 5.5m high, complete with forced ventilation and access doors at different levels. Acoustic Parameters Noise levels in excess of 107dBA were recorded at 1m from each engine, when running at full load. With the acoustic enclosures in position, the noise levels recorded immediately outside them were reduced to below 85dBA when there was negligible contribution from other generators in the power station. Design Features The enclosures were designed to be totally demountable. The 50mm thick acoustic panels were bolted to pre-formed top-hat section subframes. These subframes were also assembled by means of bolting. Particular care was taken to ensure that adequate access provision was made at the top of the enclosures to enable the rocker covers to be removed.

There were also high level side doors incorporated for routine access to the turbochargers fitted to the engines. The walkways providing access to the engines were modified to accommodate the acoustic enclosures. The ventilation system was designed to allow 340KW of access heat to be dissipated. Further Developments As a result of the success obtained on the Sulzer diesel engines, further orders were received for the provision of acoustic enclosures around Parsons Power Generation steam turbines and generators throughout the power station.
